Crowning Glory: Protecting and Growing Your Natural Hair Under Wigs

As a connoisseur of both hair care and style, you understand that wigs are more than just a fashion statement—they’re a versatile tool for expressing beauty and confidence. However, while you’re rocking various wigs, it’s crucial to remember your beautiful hair beneath. For many Black women, wigs are not only a protective style but also a means to nurture and grow flourishing natural hair. With the right approach, you can maintain and even improve the health of your natural hair while enjoying the versatility of wigs.

Here’s how……

Proper Hair Preparation

Before you even think about adding your favorite wig, preparing your natural hair is a must. This is the foundation upon which your hair’s health rests while it’s under cover. Start by thoroughly cleansing and conditioning your hair to ensure it is free from any buildup. When your hair feels fresh, and your scalp can breathe you create an environment for your hair to flourish.

Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment to reinforce moisture and strength. It’s essential to dry your hair completely to prevent mildew or bacterial growth—a common issue that arises from trapping moisture under a wig. Once your hair is clean and dry, braid it into flat cornrows or twists, which not only protects it but also provides a smooth surface for your wig to sit on. Incorporate our handmade reusable bamboo wig liners to offer an extra layer of protection. The breathable bamboo fabric will protect your hair from friction and breakage, and it wicks away moisture, keeping your scalp dry and comfortable.

Washing Your Hair Regularly

Even under a wig, your scalp continues to produce natural oils, and sweat can accumulate. Regular washing is essential to prevent itching, dandruff, and bacterial growth. Aim to wash your natural hair every 1-2 weeks, depending on your scalp’s needs and the climate you live in. Use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse without stripping your hair of its natural oils. Follow with a hydrating conditioner to replenish moisture. Remember, a clean and healthy scalp promotes hair growth, so don’t neglect this step!

Moisturizing Your Protective Style

Moisture is the lifeblood of natural hair, especially when it’s in a protective style for long periods. To keep your hair hydrated under your wig, use a leave-in conditioner or a natural oil like almond, jojoba, or argan oil. Apply these products to your hair and scalp to nourish and seal in moisture. To make this step easy and mess-free, consider investing in a spray bottle. You can mix water with your favorite leave-in conditioner and a few drops of oil for a homemade hair mist. Spritz this concoction onto your hair a few times a week to keep it moist and healthy. One common mistake is to not moisturize your hair enough. It is essential to moisturize your hair regularly between washes. Moisturizing your hair only during wash day is not enough. If you don’t eat once a week you shouldn’t think that your hair only needs moisture replaced once a week.

Taking Your Wig Off Regularly

Your scalp needs to breathe, and so does your hair. Make it a habit to take off your wig when you’re at home and give your head a good massage to stimulate blood flow. This practice not only helps with stress relief but also encourages hair growth by improving circulation. At night, let your hair rest by wearing covering your hair in a protective cloth like bamboo, satin, or silk. This will protect your hair from drying out and breaking while you sleep. And remember, our bamboo wig liners are there to help maintain the health of your natural hair when you’re wearing your wig out and about. Personally, I prefer to wear wigs that look as natural as possible and headband wigs seem to be the best option for me without having to glue them to my scalp. I am actually afraid of wearing wigs that require glue so I stick to wigs that I can manage.

Choosing the Right Protective Style

Now, let’s take a moment to reiterate the importance of protecting your hair, whether it’s under a protective style, a hat, or any other covering. Our top-notch bamboo wig cap is designed to safeguard your hair’s integrity, preventing damage and preserving moisture without compromising on style.

Not all protective styles are created equal. The way you prepare your hair before putting on a wig can impact its growth and health. Tightly pulled styles can lead to traction alopecia, so opt for looser braids or twists underneath your wig. Additionally, be mindful of the wigs you choose. Heavy wigs can strain your edges and lead to breakage, so select lightweight options that won’t tug on your natural hair. If you’re using wig caps, ensure they’re not too tight and that they allow your scalp to breathe. Growing natural hair under wigs is entirely possible with conscientious care and the right products, like our bamboo wig liner. By following these five key strategies, you can enjoy all the benefits of wig-wearing while ensuring that your natural hair thrives beneath.
