Crochet Braid Hair Maintenance: Top 5 Questions Asked

As I prepared for my vacation…. meaning I was sitting in my hair stylists chair getting my hair braided, like many of us do! We discussed some of her clients asking if you could wash your hair while in crochet braid hair. I have to admit I was surprised because I figured it was a given expectation that you should wash your hair. After watching a few videos on YouTube and understanding that since the hair is synthetic there are extra considerations and an understandable hesitation around dunking free flowing synthetic hair under water. This discussion gave me an idea to write this post to help anyone out there wondering what you should do.

My licensed cosmetologist told me the answer is YES! Please wash your hair. Remember that your hair that grows out your head and the part that came from the store need to be maintained. Think of it like this… you clean your body everyday, right? Not saying you need to wash your hair every day but if your body needs to be cleaned so does your hair. Now you do want to take in consideration swimming activities while on vacation and do your research on crochet braid hair that performs best for water activities.

Should I wash my crochet braid hair before the install?

Yes, PLEASE make sure you wash it. Think of the hair you purchased like produce from the grocery store. Would you eat an apple or grape right out the store before washing? Your synthetic crochet braid hair has dirt, chemicals, etc. You want to make sure that you remove as much excess that don’t belong in your hair. This hair has been God knows where and God knows what has been on it. Do you want that in your head?

There are so many different styles of hair. The crochet braid hair manufacturer has instructions they provide and typically they have care instructions for you to maintain your hair. Follow those instructions. Some people have said that you should only wash with conditioner. I prefer to use a shampoo since shampoos are formulated to cleanse the hair. After soaking in shampoo, I added conditioner, rinsed and allowed my hair to air dry. A common method is to use apple cider vinegar. You can consider that as a great cleanser to help remove dirt particles, chemicals, and other elements.

How do I sleep with my crochet braid hair?

You do want to make sure that you treat you crochet braid hair with the same care as you would for your actual hair. Using a satin or silk pillowcase is a good option or you can tie your hair up at night. Depending on the length you can pull your hair up to the top of your head and tie a scarf around it wear a braid bonnet or a regular bonnet to tie your hair down. For my shoulder length boho braid style I wore two pigtails and folded the hair cris-cross under to fit under a normal size bonnet.

How do I maintain crochet braid hair?

Use a styling moose and detangle your hair each day. I will admit that I had gotten lazy with doing this during weeks 3 and 4. I noticed a drastic difference with neglecting to detangle my hair. You should try to detangle in the morning and during the evening before bed for your best results. I also stopped conditioning it after washing too so that didn’t help….

Remember don’t neglect your hair under the braids. You can use a daily leave in conditioner to spray on to your scalp and hair to ensure your hair is still receiving moisture and the care it needs while in your protective style. Remember your hair is just resting and we don’t want it to dry out!
