What is stopping your natural hair from growing?
There are so many hair tips, tricks and methods for hair care natural and/or to maintain hair growth. At the end of the day, everyone’s hair is different and there’s no one solution that will work for everyone. You also have to keep in mind the overall health of your hair is an important factor impacting your growth rate. Think about it, if your hair is not healthy it may grow but your strands are weak and you won’t retain your length. Let’s start with the basics first since no matter what ever hair type you have everyone needs these natural hair care tips. Remember your hair is growing the evidence of growth is to retain length. Everyone doesn’t want long hair but everyone should want healthy hair.
Proper washing routine
The American Association of Dermatologists recommend washing black hair twice a month to once a week at most. The frequency will depend the amount of products you use, your scalp health, physical activity and your hair needs. For example, you may need to wash your hair more frequently if you are more physically active in order to remove salts and dirt from your hair that have accumulated during the week. The frequency of your washing routine may change week to week depending on how your personal routine changes and how dirty your hair gets.
Moisturizing and conditioning
Moisture is essential to the health and manageability of your hair. Elasticity is impacted by the amount of moisture your hair contains. Elasticity allows your hair to stretch without breaking. A deficiency of moisture will make your hair more dry and brittle. Think about all those protective hair styles requiring you to pull, twist and bend your strands to accomplish your desired hair style. Elasticity is one of the reasons you’re able to accomplish those styles. Conditioners are helpful with making your hair softer and easier to maintain. They have been known to protect your hair from damage, attract water to moisturize your shafts. Once your hair has been washed use your favorite conditioner as one of your natural products for growth.
Regular trims
Trimming your hair regularly is essential for natural hair care. For those who are on a growth and length retention journey you may think trimming your hair is counter intuitive, but it is exactly the opposite! Transitioning from relaxed to natural I trimmed my hair more frequently since I wanted to quickly replace my relaxed hair. Frequency of trims varies based off the condition of your hair. Timing of trims could range from every 6-8 weeks to every 3-4 months. Have a professionally licensed cosmetologist give you a professional opinion. If you’re wondering if your hair needs a trim I’ve listed some common signs that your natural hair needs a trim. It will grow back! It took me a while to get used to it 🙂
- Split ends and/or rough ends
- Single strand knots
- Thin hair appearance towards the bottom
- Increased shedding
- Tangled hair
- Properly preparing your hair for sleep
Maintaining your hair at every point of the day is so important, especially at night. Once you figure out how you’re going to tie down your hair you need to determine the fabric you’re going to use to cover your hair. Silk and satin are the recommended fabrics to use on your hair. Satin is usually more affordable than silk. I’ve developed the best wig cap made of satin. This wig cap is made with light luxurious durable satin. I especially love it because it is versatile. You can wear it as a wig cap, bonnet (minus all the extra fabric) and as a protective layer under hats. An all-in-one piece that fits your everyday life. For all my ladies that wear glueless, headband wigs, or you’re planning on wearing a hat the next day, prep your hair add this satin wig cap and you’re already ready to throw on your favorite hat or wig without having to switch out to another item. One less thing to find, misplace, or remember to pack! I think of my fitted satin wig cap as one of my essentials for natural hair care. Nutrition
A healthy well rounded diet will fulfill the needs for your body to function is so important. Realizing that your body is an enormous chemical reaction (from a biotechnology major lol). Your diet provides your body with vitamins, proteins, minerals, etc. you need those items for your body to signal, create, repair, etc. I am saying all that to say that what you put in your body matters! Iron, vitamin b and c, biotin, etc. are all essentials that your body needs to function and it also impacts the health of your hair. Nutrition is one natural hair product for growth you don’t think of everyday but is needed to support your hair from inside out.
Water
Is it possible for water, hair growth, strength, and manageability to be linked? YES!!!! Water is not only important for essential body functions but also helps with the health of your skin and hair. Water helps to energize and support hair growth. Water is the key to hydration both inside and out. H2O also can help with your hair texture and no one wants brittle hair or a head full of split ends.
Just remember it is a journey when you are maintaining your hair. The first step is to ensure your hair is healthy. You don’t want to have damaged length just to say you have length and not able to maintain it due to the health of your hair. There will be set backs but just remember to make sure you learn from those mistakes and continue to replicate the routine and use products formulated specifically for natural hair care that make a difference with your hair.
